2-storey cricket clubhouse with changing facilities; bar and lounge; tractor and mowing garage; single-storey 2nd pavilion, and 2 new pitches with 24 and 18 wicket squares.
The client’s brief required that the new clubhouse’s facilities intimately relate to the activities on the pitch. To address this issue, all facilities face the pitch and the building is curved to follow the line of the adjacent pitch boundary. The orientation of the “wickets” on the two new pitches has been optimised to suit the clubhouse.
The main building has a steel frame, which facilitates the large expanse of glazed openings from the public areas on to the terrace and entrance. The external circular columns have been kept extremely slender so as to minimise the obstruction to spectators.
The large terrace at first floor is the principal feature of the main elevation, and is protected above by the canopy of the roof. The roof finish is an impact-resistant prefinished metal panel system, whilst cedar boarding to the soffits adds warmth to the upper terrace. Facing brickwork and brown powder coated aluminum-faced timber windows give the building a traditional ‘feel’.
