A contemporary, one-off house for a private client designed around a pavilion concept overlooking the village cricket ground. To give clarity to the open-plan design, materials are used in single planes with concrete, glass, steel and blockwork used to define space in a clear and ordered manner. The light, open spaces provide constant contrasts and interest and the interplay of volume and light is carefully considered. The three principal walls run from front to back, beyond the body of the house to connect it to its surroundings. Articulation of these walls then defines the spaces within, providing a flexible and usable family home. The house is finished to the highest standard and provides a unique contribution to the surrounding area.
The house sits within an established residential area, bounded by typical suburban dwelling designs. The planners whilst resistant to breaking the existing precedent agreed that the high quality design would provide a unique contribution to the village and saw fit to approve it.
The building is designed on sustainable principles including the use of semi-basement design to conserve heat; glazed areas for solar collection though protected from overheating (using balconies) warmth being collected by thermal massing of the floors for re-radiation overnight.
