Description:

This project involved the refurbishment of a Grade II listed building situated within the development of the Shires West shopping mall in Leicester. The Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School was built in 1573 and is the oldest surviving secular building within the development area and the oldest educational establishment in Leicester. Although much restored and altered, the shell of the original building survives.

rg+p have repaired and renovated the existing Swithland slate roof; random stonewalls have been carefully repointed with lime mortar and the existing stone mullion windows have been either repaired or replaced with replicas.

The internal 1960s works were sensitively removed to expose the existing walls and roof trusses of the original building. The original 16th century roof trusses have been carefully restored and form a striking visual feature of the development.

rg+p were appointed as Conservation Architects on the scheme, which won the ProCon 2006 award. Currently the building is used as the marketing suite for Shires West development; ultimately it will be used as a restaurant.
