Project / Location:Cherry Orchard
Client:Northampton Regeneration Partnership
Our Role: Architects
Project Status: Planning StageProject Value: £15m approx.
Description:
rg+p has recently achieved planning permission for 155 new houses and apartments at the former Cherry Orchard School site in Northampton. The site has been vacant for several years since the school moved to a new site adjacent the development. The proposals include the removal of the former school building, and the retention of several mature trees. The long, narrow site has several distinct character’s which have evolved through the design process, including a contemporary take on the 1930’s properties neighbouring the site at the Wellingborough road entrance and the regency crescent fronting the existing round-a-bout on the site. A queue has been taken from the nearby Weston Favell Village to the south of the site, for the more rural feeling properties fronting onto the generous areas of public open space. While the zones are clearly defined and well detailed, the key to the success of the development was ensuring a harmonious transition between characters to achieve a cohesive development.

Project / Location:Kibworth Cricket Club
Client: Kibworth Cricket Club
Our Role: Architects & Quantity Surveyors
Project Status: Complete
Project Value: £600,000
Description:
2-storey cricket clubhouse with changing facilities; bar and lounge; tractor and mowing garage; single-storey 2nd pavilion, and 2 new pitches with 24 and 18 wicket squares.

The client’s brief required that the new clubhouse’s facilities intimately relate to the activities on the pitch. To address this issue, all facilities face the pitch and the building is curved to follow the line of the adjacent pitch boundary. The orientation of the “wickets” on the two new pitches has been optimised to suit the clubhouse.

The main building has a steel frame, which facilitates the large expanse of glazed openings from the public areas on to the terrace and entrance. The external circular columns have been kept extremely slender so as to minimise the obstruction to spectators.

The large terrace at first floor is the principal feature of the main elevation, and is protected above by the canopy of the roof. The roof finish is an impact-resistant prefinished metal panel system, whilst cedar boarding to the soffits adds warmth to the upper terrace. Facing brickwork and brown powder coated aluminum-faced timber windows give the building a traditional ‘feel’.

Project / Location:Rose Cottage
Client: Private
Our Role: Architecture, Quantity Surveying
Project Status: Complete
Project Value: £750,000
Description:
A contemporary dwelling which responds to the topography, views and history of the site. It is an innovative building which contains the rooms and areas required to suit the lifestyle of the client with a total floor area of 450m². The development is laid out about an axis emanating from the entrance of the site and extending into the landscape beyond, responding to the views and the contours. In its purest form the dwelling is a series of spine walls that form a radial arc creating enclosure for the dwelling. Ground source heat pumps and orientation to maximize solar gain add to the building's green credentials.
